Ignition Interlock Device
The only way to deter DUI offenders is with the installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID).
However, automobile technology has changed, more vehicles are incorporating start/stop technology to reduce emissions and increase gas mileage.
On older vehicles the IID works fine, but over the past several years vehicles with start/stop technology are becoming the norm,
with predicitions of 70% of the cars on the road incorporating such a feature by 2020.
Many states are passing laws that require first time offenders to install an IID in their vehicle.
However, vehicles that are equipped with start/stop technology are being turned away by IID installers because
they don't have a solution to the problem that occurs when an IID is installed on a vehicle with start/stop technology.
The problem occurs when an IID performs a rolling retest, that is when the operator of the vehicle is requested to give a breathe sample
after the vehicle has been running a certain length of time. If the vehicle happens to be stopped or comes to a stop after the request has been given,
the vehicle engine will not restart until a valid BAC retest has been completed. This could temporarily place the vehicle and its occupants
in an unsafe situation, such as in the middle of an intersection, in a construction zone, or on the side of a mountain.
By implementing our patent pending logic circuit with the IID, we eliminate the problem, and the operation of the IID is not modified.
Safety is not compromised; the IID and LC will be installed as a deterent, reducing the liability for the IID manufacturer.
